Trump-supported bill to prevent government shutdown fails to get majority, Republican proposal rejected.

The US House of Representatives on Thursday rejected the Republican-led funding bill by a large majority. The bill aimed to prevent a government shutdown, as federal agencies will run out of funds by Friday night and operations will stop over the government activities are expected to halt.

AFP, Washington: The Trump-supported bill could not pass in the US Congress. The House of Representatives rejected the newly elected President Trump's plan to fund federal operations and to raise or suspend the debt limit just a day before the government shutdown.

About three dozen Republicans joined Democrats to vote against Trump's sudden demands and the solution prepared by GOP leaders. The bill was rejected in Congress with a 174-235 vote.

Trump had made this appeal to the lawmakers.

Earlier, newly elected US President Donald Trump urged Republican lawmakers on Wednesday to reject the cross-party agreement aimed at avoiding a government shutdown.

A shutdown means that if the government doesn't get necessary funding, government offices may close, and employees could be sent home without pay.

Lawmakers from both parties had agreed to fund the government until March and ensure employees wouldn't be sent home without pay. However, Trump and several of his key allies, including billionaire businessman Elon Musk, were unhappy with the agreement due to higher spending. They argued that it would increase the country's financial burden.

The revised version was considered under a fast-track process, requiring two-thirds support. However Democrats made it clear they would not give Republicans the votes needed to compensate for their rebels, and the bill also failed to secure a simple majority.

Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said before the vote, This proposal is not serious, it's ridiculous. Extreme MAGA Republicans are pushing us towards a government shutdown. The White House called it a gift for billionaires.

Now, a shutdown seems almost certain, which would mean the closure of all kinds of federal agencies and potentially sending nearly one million employees home without pay during Christmas.

The Speaker is under criticism.

Government operations are set to shut down from midnight Saturday, with an estimated 875,000 employees at risk of being sent home without pay, and essential workers continuing to work without pay during the holidays.

Republican House Speaker Mile Johnson is facing criticism from all sides for handling the negotiations, and his position could be at risk when he runs for re-election in January.
