Reuters, Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday proposed direct peace talks with Ukraine for the first time in years. He also expressed readiness for future ceasefires after a one-day Easter truce. Putin's statement comes amid pressure from Washington to show willingness for peace.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine is sending a delegation to London for a meeting with the US and other Western nations on Wednesday. This London talk follows last week's discussions in Paris, where measures to end the over three-year-long war were discussed.

Speaking to Russian state TV, Putin noted that fighting resumed after the 30-hour Easter truce announced on Saturday. Both Russian and Ukraine have accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Kyiv had dismissed the truce from the beginning, calling it a propaganda stunt.

Ukraine accuses (Russia) of violating ceasefire

Washington welcomes ceasefire extension Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has demanded a 30-day truce for civilian areas. Citing Sunday's Russian attacks, he said Moscow intends to prolong the war.

Putin stated that Moscow is open to peace efforts and expects the same approach from Kyiv. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Interfax news agency: "When the President spoke about negotiations on avoiding civilian targets, he meant direct talks with Ukraine,"

However, Zelenskyy did not directly respond to Putin's bilateral talks proposal.

Announcing the London talks on X (formerly Twitter), he stated: Ukraine, the United Kingdom, France and America remain ready to move forward constructively as before - to achieve an unconditional ceasefire and establish lasting peace.

Trump's warning and Russia's tough demands

Alternate options:

  • "Trump's warning meets Russian's hardline demands" (more dynamic)
  • "Trump cautions as Russia puts forward strict conditions" (more explanatory)
On Monday, Zelenskyy stated that his forces would respond proportionally to Russian military actions. He wrote on X "Ukraine's response will always be symbolic ceasefire met with ceasefire attacks met with our defense Actions speak louder that words.

US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on Friday that America could withdraw from talks if progress isn't made soon. However, Trump struck an optimistic note on Sunday Hopefully both sides will reach an agreement this week.

Russian is still sticking to its old demands, to all the territories Putin has declared and remaining permanently neutral. Ukraine has described this as a surrender that would leave it vulnerable to Russia i the future.

Peskov refused to comment on any timeline regrading Trump's possible deal. He said are still open to finding a peaceful solution. We are working with the American side and hope it will lead to positive result.
